![]() Underneath his callow, self-centered façade, does he genuinely want (on some level) to form real partnerships and find a real mentor-or is every single one of his relationships based on pure self-interest and a desire to manipulate others? His emotionally charged rivalry with CM Punk has particularly opened up new dimensions in his character. AEW seems to be somewhat aware of his morally ambiguity, as Cody doesn't come out of the Face or Heel tunnels, but instead arises from the middle of the two. ![]() Is Cody Rhodes a genuinely good guy who only wants what's best for the company? Or do the expensive clothes, long and over-the-top entrances, hideous neck tattoo indicate him as a self-indulgent egotist who is only pretending to be a hero? One promo in particular even alluded to the idea that Cody may be a good person at heart, but one with great temptation to turn to the dark side. Was Danielson always an arrogant and sadistic bully hiding under a superficial veneer of niceness, or did he just succumb to his worst impulses once the World Championship title was within his grasp? Did he originally challenge The Elite to end their reign of terror, or because he wanted their dominant position at the company for himself? Relatedly: did he pick his vicious feud with "Hangman" Adam Page because he didn't believe that Hangman was worthy of the championship, or was he motivated by his former association with his arch-rival Kenny Omega and determined to get Revenge by Proxy? Danielson's heel turn may also have been originally intended for Moxley, given that in the weeks before his hiatus, Moxley began displaying a (even) more aggresive in-ring style, and began cutting promos implying that he was dissatisfied with the big-name signings like Danielson and CM Punk coming to the company once it became popular while he gave it a chance during its inception. note This was reportedly because Jon Moxley was originally slated to win the 2021 Eliminator Tournament, but his shot at the championship had to be given to Danielson after he dropped out of the tournament to check himself into rehab. Bryan Danielson's rather abrupt Face–Heel Turn at the end of 2021 left a lot of room for ambiguity, especially considering how starkly his actions after Full Gear in 2021 contrasted his actions before it.
